They don't want it to be janky, and they have a lot of stuff they still plan on doing, and it's not an easy thing to implement without it being crap. There's no conspiracy, multiplayer was never in the original plan, it was something that was added to the list of "things to do eventually" late in development, and only after DMP proved it was possible (though janky).
